Tom K. Faro, OYSAN Executive Director
March 22, 2007
Dear League Presidents and/or Representatives:
Spring is here! As all of us prepare for the spring season I wanted to let you know of some positive changes taking place here at Ohio North.
First, as some of you may know, there have been some enhancements and modifications to our E-Reg Club & League Systems. If you or your registrars have questions about our online system please do not hesitate to contact our State Registrar, Pam Menick.
This fall, OYSAN will be introducing three categories (with three different fees) as it relates to registration. (Recreation, Competitive and Premier) The Rec Plus category is being eliminated. With the introduction of just three categories for registration, OYSAN will also be eliminating the $5 per club fee charged to our leagues and the $2 per team fee.
Also, OYSAN’s Board of Directors and Staff will be addressing the needs on bringing a recreational tournament (or two) to strategic locations within the boundaries of Ohio North. Our organization believes that there is a need for these types of events. The retailer, Kohl’s, has partnered with US Youth Soccer and State Associations like ours on making these types of events possible. More information on these events will be available soon.
On the risk management front, through legal consultation (and through a review the State of Ohio’s Best Practices), OYSAN will be moving towards the conducting of background checks on all coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, board members, etc. annually rather than every two years. This is the best way to ensure that those coaching or having contact with our children do not possess criminal histories. In making this change, OYSAN assumes additional costs. In the fall of 2007, OYSAN may need to pass on a nominal fee to those applying for clearance through our online application process. This decision will be made once OYSAN has gone through its budget process. The fee charged would be utilized to assist OYSAN in paying for the costs of conducting the annual checks, reviewing the annual checks and the continued use of our legal counsel.
In late April, OYSAN will be moving its State Office to a location that permits expansion. OYSAN will remain in Richfield, Ohio and will retain its current post office box and its current telephone and fax numbers. OYSAN will be closed April 23-27 due our move and will reopen on Monday, April 30.
With respect to Coach Education, OYSAN will be introducing ‘academy play’ with the U-9 age group in OYSAN’s State League. ‘Academy’ play will consist of games and training in a small-sided format where players are placed into random pools each weekend of play and in a non-stressful environment. Additionally, as of March 19, 2007 travel (out-of-state) at the U-9 age group is now permitted. (In the past, U-9 travel out-of-state for league play or for tournaments was prohibited.)
Over the next few months, the OYSAN Board will be considering a proposal to sanction/endorse indoor soccer. Should this pass, insurance coverage would be extended to our members in the event of injury. I will keep our leagues posted on this matter.
For those interested, OYSAN’s State Cup Tournament held in Toledo and Akron has 144 teams and will be held May 18-20 and June 1-3, 2007. In addition, the OYSAN Board has named Mr. Tom Pickett as the Administrator of our State League Program. This spring, OYSAN has a record 178 teams participating in the State League!
Finally, OYSAN’s spring issue (May) of the OHIO SOCCER publication will be dedicated to the promotion of OYSAN’s club tryouts and camps. If your club or league is interested in advertising, please see the attached.
OYSAN wishes each of you a great spring season. If any of us here at OYSAN can be of assistance to you in your respective roles, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely yours,
Mr. Thomas K. Faro Executive Director Ohio Youth Soccer Association-North, Inc. tomfaro@oysan.org (330) 659-0989 office (330) 659-0993 fax
